Laurie Stach Founded LaunchX Entrepreneurship Program

Laurie Stach, an MIT alumna from the class of 2006, founded LaunchX in 2012, a for-profit entrepreneurship program designed to empower high school students with practical business-building skills. Stach, who pursued mechanical engineering at MIT and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2011, identified a gap in traditional education that often delays the development of entrepreneurial capabilities in young individuals. She observed that while mathematically and scientifically gifted youth are recognized for future potential, educational systems frequently fail to provide them with the immediate tools and experience needed to innovate and lead.

LaunchX addresses this by immersing students in an intensive four-week summer program where they form teams, identify real-world problems, and develop tangible products or services. These student-led ventures are then brought to market, with many teams achieving preorders or generating revenue before the program concludes. Stach initiated the first LaunchX summer program in 2013 on the MIT campus, hosting 30 students. The program's success led to its expansion, and it now accommodates approximately 500 students annually through a combination of in-person and online offerings. Stach's own entrepreneurial drive was evident from her teenage years, characterized by a "crazy ambition to take on the world and solve problems," a sentiment she found mirrored among her peers at MIT.

The program's structure encourages hands-on learning, moving beyond theoretical concepts to practical application. Students are guided through the entire process of company creation, from ideation and market research to product development and sales strategy.
