Landmark Housing Bill Set To Be Sent to Trump After He Abruptly Canceled Signing

The 21st Century Road to Housing Act will be sent to President Donald Trump, following his abrupt cancellation of a signing ceremony. House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed the bill's submission to Trump, who has 10 days to sign or veto it, or it will automatically become law if Congress is in session. This bipartisan legislation, described as one of the most comprehensive housing bills in decades, passed the House with a 358-32 vote and the Senate with an 85-5 vote. The act includes 45 provisions designed to reduce regulatory hurdles and stimulate new home construction, such as limiting institutional investor activity, implementing new mortgage lending rules, and streamlining building processes. Trump's cancellation came after he deemed the bill "of minor importance" and requested Congress pass the unrelated Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This decision caused confusion and frustration among lawmakers, with Johnson stating he would follow Trump's lead and that further review of the bill's details would occur.
