Kroger Rewards Adds Grocery Redemption Option

Kroger announced this week that its loyalty program, Kroger Rewards, now allows customers to redeem accumulated points for discounts on groceries, in addition to the existing option of redeeming for fuel savings. This change provides a new avenue for shoppers who do not regularly purchase gasoline to benefit from the rewards program. Customers continue to earn 1 point per dollar spent on most grocery purchases, with bonus points available for qualifying gift cards and eligible prescriptions.
The new redemption structure offers two primary choices: 100 Kroger Rewards points can be exchanged for $1 off groceries, with a daily limit of $10 in savings. Alternatively, 100 points can be redeemed for a 10-cent discount per gallon of fuel, capped at $1 off per gallon for up to 35 gallons. This dual redemption strategy aims to cater to a broader range of customer needs.
Analysis suggests that while redeeming points for groceries offers a consistent value of 1 cent per point, the value proposition for fuel redemptions can be significantly higher depending on the volume of fuel purchased. For instance, redeeming 1,000 points for groceries yields a $10 saving. The same 1,000 points, when redeemed for fuel, can provide a $10 saving on a 10-gallon fill-up, but can increase to a $15 saving on 15 gallons, a $20 saving on 20 gallons, and a maximum of $35 saving on 35 gallons. This means that for purchases exceeding 10 gallons of fuel, the pump redemption generally offers a superior return on points.
