Kick It Out Demands Harsher Football Sanctions Amid Record Discrimination

The anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out has called for more stringent sanctions to be imposed on individuals and clubs found guilty of discriminatory behavior in football, citing a record high in reported incidents. The organization's annual report, released on November 21, 2023, detailed a significant increase in discrimination cases across various levels of the sport.

According to the report, Kick It Out received a total of 1,258 reports of discrimination during the 2022-2023 season. This figure represents a 40% increase compared to the previous season's 897 reports, marking the highest number of incidents recorded since the organization began collecting data. The majority of these reports, 53%, were related to racist abuse, a persistent issue within the sport. Following racism, 31% of the reports concerned disability discrimination, and 11% related to homophobic abuse. Other forms of discrimination, including religious abuse and sexism, accounted for the remaining percentage.

The data further indicates that online discrimination has become a growing concern, with a substantial portion of the reports originating from social media platforms. Kick It Out highlighted that while the number of reports has increased, the perceived effectiveness of current sanctions is insufficient to deter perpetrators. The organization argues that current penalties, which often include fines or short bans, do not adequately reflect the severity of the harm caused by discrimination and fail to create a truly inclusive environment.

In response to these findings, Kick It Out is advocating for a multi-faceted approach to tackling discrimination. This includes advocating for mandatory education programs for players, coaches, and club staff, as well as implementing stricter disciplinary measures by football governing bodies such as the Football Association (FA) and the Premier League. The organization specifically proposes longer suspensions for repeat offenders and a more robust system for reporting and investigating incidents. Kick It Out also emphasized the need for greater accountability from social media companies to address online abuse more effectively. The organization's stance underscores a growing demand within the football community for decisive action to eradicate discrimination and promote equality on and off the pitch.
