Judge Blocks Trump Admin Subpoenas for NYT Reporters' Records

US District Judge Arun Subramanian rejected demands from the Trump administration's Department of Justice for phone records and grand jury testimony from New York Times reporters on Thursday. The subpoenas were related to articles concerning security issues with an Air Force One jet gifted to former President Donald Trump by Qatar. This decision represents a setback for the administration's efforts to identify confidential sources used by journalists.

During a hearing, Judge Subramanian "grilled Justice Department lawyers for nearly an hour over their handling of the subpoenas," according to The New York Times. The judge presented the Justice Department with a choice: either the subpoenas would be quashed, or the department could withdraw them. Sean Buckley, chief counsel for the US attorney in New York's southern district, was reportedly present for this exchange.

The Justice Department subsequently withdrew its demands for the reporters' records. This action followed significant criticism from the federal judge regarding the government's pursuit of journalistic sources. The case highlighted ongoing tensions between law enforcement's investigative needs and the press's ability to protect its sources.
