John Legend Pays Rent for 50 College Students

Singer John Legend has partnered with Bilt, a real estate technology company, to alleviate housing cost burdens for 50 college students. This initiative, part of Bilt's October Rent Day program, specifically targets students facing financial pressures related to rent payments. Legend personally selected four universities to benefit from this program: Morehouse College, Central State University, Wilberforce University, and his own alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. The partnership aims to provide direct financial assistance for rent, acknowledging the significant financial challenges many students encounter while pursuing higher education.

Legend's involvement stems from his personal experiences with financial hardship during his college years at the University of Pennsylvania. He recalled working multiple jobs, including a work-study position and employment at a church, to manage his expenses and pay his own rent after moving off-campus during his sophomore year. This "hustle" to cover living costs provided him with a deep understanding of the financial anxieties college students often face. Legend expressed empathy for current students in similar situations, stating, "I know what it feels like to be in that position where you've got to figure out how to do it yourself." His participation highlights a commitment to supporting educational access by addressing a fundamental need like housing.

The collaboration extends beyond direct rent payments. Bilt and John Legend are working with Scholarship America to implement a rent assistance program specifically designed for students living off-campus who are at risk of eviction. This program underscores the critical link between stable housing and academic success. Furthermore, Bilt members will have the opportunity to contribute their loyalty points to Scholarship America, beginning on Rent Day, with 100% of these contributions directed towards student aid. This multifaceted approach aims to create a sustainable support system for students navigating financial difficulties, ensuring that housing insecurity does not impede their educational journeys. Legend emphasized the importance of education in his own life, noting how his college experience "set me up for life," thereby reinforcing the value of enabling others to access similar opportunities.
