JetBlue Wins Spirit's LaGuardia Slots, Eyes Historic Terminal

JetBlue secured coveted takeoff and landing slots at New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) this week, previously held by the defunct Spirit Airlines. The acquisition could allow JetBlue to operate up to 12 additional daily roundtrips from LGA, according to a CNBC report. Spirit Airlines ceased operations in May, leading to the liquidation of its assets, including these valuable airport slots.

Beyond the operational slots, JetBlue has also expressed interest in relocating its LaGuardia operations to the historic Marine Air Terminal (Terminal A). A JetBlue spokesperson confirmed this interest on Tuesday. The Marine Air Terminal, built in 1940, currently has no commercial service since Spirit was its sole occupant before ceasing operations on May 2.

JetBlue currently operates out of the larger and more modern Terminal B at LaGuardia, which features amenities like an American Express Centurion Lounge and a Chase Sapphire Lounge. However, the airline stated that moving to Terminal A would provide "much-needed cost savings" to support its expansion plans at the airport. High operating costs at LaGuardia were previously cited by JetBlue as a factor in its retrenchment from certain routes.

The airline still requires court and regulatory approval to finalize the addition of new routes and the potential move to the Marine Air Terminal. If approved, the move would represent a significant shift for JetBlue at LaGuardia, potentially consolidating its presence in a historically significant but less modern facility to achieve greater cost efficiencies.
