Jeff Bezos says AI will cause “labor scarcity,” not job loss

Jeff Bezos stated that artificial intelligence will lead to a "labor scarcity" rather than widespread job loss, a view he expressed in a recent CNBC interview. He believes that significant productivity gains driven by AI will elevate the standard of living and increase the demand for human work, creating a shortage of labor. Bezos previously articulated this perspective in May, asserting that AI pessimists were "dead wrong" and that the technology would "elevate" young workers, enabling them to perform tasks at a "higher level." He anticipates that AI innovation will expand the economy, resulting in greater demand for human labor than the current supply.
Vik Bajaj, co-CEO of AI startup Prometheus, echoed Bezos's sentiment during the same interview, emphasizing that invention, rather than companies alone, truly creates jobs. Bajaj explained that inventions are rooted in dreams but require actual realization. Prometheus, co-founded by Bezos and Bajaj, officially launched in November with $6.2 billion in funding. The company is developing AI tools designed to accelerate engineering work, which it refers to as an "artificial general engineer."
Prometheus recently secured an additional $12 billion in a funding round led by Bezos, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, DST Global, and Arch Venture Partners, achieving a $41 billion valuation. This funding will support the company's mission to build AI tools that enhance engineering efficiency. Bezos and Bajaj foresee a future with more engineers and increased job opportunities in engineering and manufacturing as a direct consequence of AI advancements.
