JD Vance Welcomes Child While in Office, First in 150+ Years

Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday. This event marks the first time a sitting U.S. vice president has welcomed a child while in office in over 150 years. The baby was born at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, with the Vances thanking the medical staff. Alec Neel Vance joins his older siblings Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel.

The birth of their new son aligns with Vice President Vance's public advocacy for increased birth rates in the United States. Vance, who launched his political career in 2021, has frequently expressed concern over declining birth rates. He stated at the 2025 March for Life rally, "I want more babies in the United States of America." Vance has also suggested that the 2025 killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a friend, influenced their decision to have another child.

Usha Vance, 40, and JD Vance, 41, have made their growing family a visible part of his vice presidency. Their children have accompanied them on overseas trips, often seen boarding Air Force Two. Usha Vance, the daughter of immigrants from India, has garnered public attention, with her pregnancy further amplifying this spotlight due to the rarity of high-ranking officials expanding their families while in service.

The last recorded instance of a sitting vice president becoming a father occurred in the 1800s. Schuyler Colfax and his wife Ellen Wade had a son, Schuyler Colfax III, in 1870 during Colfax's term as vice president.
