Japan Records First 'Cruelly Hot Day' Above 40C

Japan recorded its first official "kokushobi," a new term for days exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, on Tuesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency introduced this designation in April to alert the public to the increasing frequency of extreme heat events. This marks a significant shift from when such temperatures were considered rare occurrences.

Several cities in central Japan registered temperatures at or above the 40C threshold. Gujo and Tajimi in Gifu prefecture, along with Toyota in Aichi prefecture, all reached 40C. Notably, Gujo recorded its all-time highest temperature at 40C, and Toyota set a new record with 40.1C at their respective weather stations. These readings highlight the severity of the current heatwave impacting the region.

In response to the extreme heat, the Japanese government has advised workers to wear shorts to the office as a measure to cope with the stifling conditions. The coining of "kokushobi" reflects a growing concern over climate change and its tangible effects on daily life and public health. The term "cruelly hot day" underscores the severity and potential danger associated with these unprecedented temperature spikes.
