Jalapeño Salmonella Recall Expands to Major Retailers

Initially, the contaminated jalapeños were identified in food sold at restaurant chains, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba, prompting these establishments to remove the peppers from their offerings, as confirmed by the FDA. However, the investigation was ongoing to determine if these potentially contaminated jalapeños had also reached grocery store shelves. While the FDA has not yet released a further update on the outbreak or other impacted products, manufacturer Taylor Fresh Foods has initiated a new recall. On August 9, Taylor Fresh Foods announced a voluntary recall of 20 products containing jalapeños. This recall notice was subsequently published on the FDA’s website. According to the notice, Taylor Fresh Foods is recalling these products because the jalapeños used were sourced from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, who also supplies jalapeños to Coast Citrus Distributors. Taylor Fresh Foods has stated that they are no longer sourcing products from this particular farmer and are transitioning to alternative suppliers. The specific retailers impacted by the Taylor Fresh Foods recall include, but are not limited to, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Whole Foods, Kroger, and Target. The recall specifically covers products manufactured by Taylor Fresh Foods that contain jalapeños. Consumers are advised to check the FDA's website and recall notices for a comprehensive list of affected products and retailers. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness, with symptoms typically including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
