IWC Releases Two Ingenieur SL 50th Anniversary Watches

IWC Schaffhausen has unveiled two limited-edition Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary watches to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Gérald Genta’s original Ingenieur SL design from 1976. The original Ingenieur SL, known as Reference 1832, was notable for its integrated bracelet and bezel secured by five screws, a design element that influenced the luxury sports watch category. Although only 598 units of the original were produced between 1976 and 1983, it has become a highly collectible piece for IWC enthusiasts and inspired the modern Ingenieur line introduced in 2023. The new anniversary editions are presented in two sizes, 40mm and 35mm, and both feature brushed silver-plated dials. These dials are inspired by a rare vintage variant of the 1970s Reference 1832 and offer a monochromatic aesthetic. The hands are rhodium-plated, and the indices are filled with Super-LumiNova®. A subtle commemorative detail replaces the traditional lightning bolt motif under the "Ingenieur" inscription with the number "50". Both watches are housed in stainless steel cases and feature the signature satin-finished bezel with five screws and polished edges. The 40mm model's integrated bracelet is fully satin-finished, while the 35mm version incorporates polished middle links to provide a more refined dress-sports appearance. The 40mm Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary edition is powered by IWC's in-house Calibre 32111. This movement features a double-pawl winding system, providing a substantial 120-hour power reserve. It also includes a soft-iron inner case designed to protect the movement from magnetic fields, a crucial feature for a sports watch. In contrast, the 35mm edition is equipped with the Calibre 47110, which is visible through a sapphire crystal caseback. This movement is distinguished by a gold-plated oscillating weight and offers a power reserve of 42 hours. Each of these limited editions is capped at 1,150 pieces. The pricing for these commemorative timepieces starts at $12,900 USD for the 35mm model, with the 40mm model priced at $14,900 USD. These releases underscore IWC's commitment to honoring its horological heritage while introducing contemporary refinements to its iconic designs, appealing to both collectors and new enthusiasts of the Ingenieur line.
