Israel deports French journalist accused of supporting Hamas

Israel deported French journalist Émilie Dubois on May 15, 2024, accusing her of supporting Hamas. The Israeli Interior Ministry stated that Dubois's reporting violated the country's anti-terrorism law. Dubois, who worked for the French newspaper Le Monde, was detained at Ben Gurion Airport and placed on a flight back to Paris. Le Monde has denied the allegations, asserting that Dubois's work adhered to journalistic ethics and was critical of all parties involved in the conflict. The deportation comes amid ongoing international criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza and concerns about press freedom in the region. Human rights organizations have expressed alarm over the incident, calling for a thorough investigation into the accusations and Dubois's treatment. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that at least 97 journalists, the majority Palestinian, have been killed since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, with many more injured or detained.
