IOC Lifts Suspension, Allows Russian Athletes at LA 2028

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on March 26, 2024, that it has lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). This decision means that Russian athletes will be eligible to compete at the LA 2028 Olympic Games. The IOC had initially suspended the ROC in February 2023 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which led to a ban on Russian teams and athletes from most international sports competitions.

The IOC's decision comes after a period of review and consultation with various international sports federations and stakeholders. While the suspension of the ROC has been lifted, the IOC has not yet made a decision regarding the display of Russian national symbols, such as the flag, colours, or anthem, during the LA 2028 Games. This aspect remains under consideration and will be subject to further evaluation.

Previously, the IOC had allowed Russian athletes to compete as "neutral athletes" at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics under strict conditions, excluding those who actively supported the war in Ukraine. The lifting of the full suspension for the ROC suggests a potential shift in the IOC's approach towards Russian participation in future major sporting events. The IOC stated that the decision was made based on the recommendations of its Executive Board and aims to ensure fair competition and inclusivity in the Olympic movement.
