Interpol Uncovers $122M Crypto Wallet in Romance Scam Bust

Interpol announced this week that a global anti-fraud operation, codenamed "Operation Blooming Onion," has uncovered a cryptocurrency wallet linked to romance scam laundering that processed over $122.5 million in a 10-month period. The operation, which involved law enforcement agencies from 35 countries, resulted in the arrest of 5,811 individuals suspected of involvement in various fraud schemes. The exposed wallet is believed to be a central hub for illicit funds generated through romance scams, where perpetrators build trust with victims online before soliciting money under false pretenses.

The investigation highlighted the significant role digital currencies play in facilitating transnational crime. The sheer volume of funds processed through the single wallet underscores the sophistication and scale of these operations. Interpol's statement indicated that the funds were likely moved through multiple layers of transactions to obscure their origin and destination, a common tactic in cryptocurrency money laundering. During the operation, authorities also seized over $67 million in cash and virtual assets, alongside 47 luxury vehicles and 116 electronic devices.
