Instagram now lets users tell the algorithm what they want

Instagram expanded its "Your Algorithm" controls to the main feed this week, allowing users to directly influence the topics that shape their recommendations across Feed, Reels, and Explore. This feature enables users to view, remove, and add topics that Instagram associates with their interests, thereby adjusting future content suggestions. Instagram initially launched "Your Algorithm" for Reels in December and has progressively broadened these topic controls to other recommendation surfaces. The integration into the main feed is significant as recommended posts from accounts users do not follow constitute a growing portion of the user experience. Instagram head Adam Mosseri stated that this update addresses user feedback regarding a perceived lack of control over algorithmically driven feeds, where the system learns from user interactions but does not explicitly receive user preferences. The advancement of large language models has enabled Instagram to categorize content clusters using plain language, offering users a more intuitive method to guide the system's understanding of their preferences. This shift aligns with a broader trend described by Gary Vaynerchuk, moving from follower-based feeds to interest-based discovery, where platforms prioritize engagement over follower counts. Instagram's enhanced transparency aims to make this interest-matching model more accessible to users. Future controls are planned, extending beyond topics to include preferences for people and moods.
