Inside the $1 Million White House UFC Lawn Fix and the Real Cost of Resodding Your Own Property

The White House South Lawn sustained significant damage following the UFC Freedom 250 event on June 14, which coincided with President Donald Trump's 80th birthday. Large areas of discolored grass and exposed dirt were visible. Scotts Miracle-Gro pledged $1 million to restore the lawn, planning to resod it immediately and subsequently develop a custom turfgrass blend designed to withstand the demands of public events. Matthew Koch, R&D lawns research fellow at Scotts Miracle-Gro, stated that creating a proprietary blend for the White House's specific conditions presented unique challenges, emphasizing the lawn's role as a functional space hosting hundreds of events and thousands of people annually. This restoration project will be privately funded, avoiding taxpayer expenses, and the lawn is expected to return to its original condition. Horticulturist Nathan Heinrich noted that lawns are naturally resilient and, with effort and time, damage from events like a UFC fight dome can become imperceptible. Homeowners facing similar lawn damage from heavy foot traffic, pests, or backyard projects can often restore their lawns themselves, which is typically a more economical approach.
