Activist Wangchuk Sets Conditions to End Ladakh Hunger Strike

Sonam Wangchuk, an Indian climate activist and engineer, has outlined specific conditions for ending his hunger strike, which began on March 6, 2024, in Leh, Ladakh. Wangchuk is demanding full statehood for Ladakh and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to protect the region's land, environment, and culture from exploitation by external industries. He has been on a silent protest, observing a daily fast from 10 AM to 4 PM, and has now escalated to a full hunger strike, consuming only water.

Wangchuk's demands are directed at the Indian government, particularly concerning the Union Territory's future after the revocation of Article 370 in 2019, which previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, including Ladakh.
