India Activist Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike

Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer and climate activist, concluded his 26-day hunger strike on March 27, 2024, in Leh, Ladakh. Wangchuk initiated the fast on March 4, 2024, to advocate for the protection of the Himalayas and the rights of the region's indigenous people, particularly in the context of proposed industrial development. His protest aimed to draw attention to the demands of the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, which are seeking constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution for Ladakh.

Wangchuk stated that he decided to end the hunger strike to prevent any "possible violence" and to allow the youth-led protesters, who have been demonstrating for education reforms and other local issues, to continue their movement without his fast becoming a focal point for potential conflict. He emphasized that his health had deteriorated significantly, and he did not want his condition to become a reason for further escalation or distraction from the core issues.

The activist's protest gained national and international attention, with many supporting his cause for environmental protection and indigenous rights. He had been consuming only water throughout the strike. Wangchuk, who previously inspired the Bollywood film "3 Idiots," has been a prominent voice for sustainable development and the preservation of the unique cultural and ecological heritage of the Himalayan region. His decision to end the fast is seen as a strategic move to de-escalate tensions while keeping the focus on the ongoing demands for greater autonomy and environmental protection for Ladakh.
