Lesotho's Afriski Resort Caters to Southern Africa's Ski Enthusiasts

Lesotho's Afriski Mountain Resort has emerged as a key destination for ski enthusiasts across southern Africa, drawing visitors to its high-altitude slopes during the Southern Hemisphere's winter months. Situated at approximately 3,200 meters (10,499 feet) above sea level in the Maluti Mountains, the resort is Lesotho's sole fully operational ski facility and the only one in sub-Saharan Africa. The resort, which opened 25 years ago, offers skiing across 17 hectares (42 acres) and utilizes artificial snow machines to ensure operations throughout the winter season, typically from June to August when temperatures can drop to minus 8 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit).

Despite its small size and landlocked geography, Lesotho's mountainous terrain and high elevation contribute to its status as the coldest country on the continent, making it conducive to winter sports. The resort is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the nearest major town, Butha-Buthe. Tourism plays a significant role in Lesotho's economy, contributing approximately 7% to its annual GDP of $2.6 billion, according to data from the previous year. Afriski provides a vital economic contribution to Lesotho, a nation identified by the World Bank as one of the world's poorest countries.

While U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly questioned global awareness of Lesotho in 2025, the country, bordered entirely by South Africa and with a population of 2.3 million, has a rich history, including celebrating the founding of the Basotho nation and its independence from British rule. Lesotho's geography, situated entirely above 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), naturally receives snowfall, and skiing is gaining traction as a sport, moving beyond its traditional associations with North America and the European Alps. Most visitors access the resort by driving from neighboring South Africa.
