Trump Bans CNN, Networks Boycott Helipad Ceremony

The ceremony, intended to project an image of normalcy, featured Trump cutting a ribbon with oversized gold scissors and interacting with officials and construction workers. However, any remarks Trump may have made were inaudible due to the noise of the waiting helicopter, and he did not respond to reporters' shouted questions before boarding Marine One. Trump later posted on his social media site about the "maiden voyage" from the "beautiful" new Heliport.

Politico and CNN have filed lawsuits following Trump's announcement on Friday that he was barring them from covering the White House. This action represents a significant escalation of his ongoing efforts to limit news coverage he deems unfavorable, employing both legal and administrative tactics. CNN is a regular participant in a five-network rotation that supplies pooled footage of daily White House activities. When CNN was prevented from taking its scheduled turn on Monday, ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox News collectively decided to forgo coverage of the helipad ceremony.

The new helipad, which Trump has frequently promoted, features extensive granite he claims will last "a million years" and displays a large "Seal of the President of the United States" insignia. Trump had intended to impress Chinese President Xi Jinping, who was scheduled to arrive for a state visit on Wednesday. This focus on impressing foreign dignitaries occurred concurrently with Trump's public criticisms of Democrats, whom he characterized as communists, in an effort to bolster Republican control of Congress.

The White House Correspondents' Association has condemned the ban, stating that "punishing journalists for asking tough questions or for the content of their reporting runs counter to the principles of a free press." The association further noted that "access to the White House is not a privilege to be granted or revoked based on the perceived favorability of coverage." The ban on CNN and Politico, and the subsequent network boycott, highlights a growing tension between the Trump administration and segments of the news media, raising concerns about transparency and the public's right to information.
