Stacie Grissom, a 38-year-old mother of one, has spent the past five years undertaking an extensive renovation to convert a 112-year-old schoolhouse in Franklin, Indiana, into her family's dream mansion. Grissom, who previously worked in content and marketing for the pet product company BarkBox in New York City for 11 years, relocated back to her hometown with her husband, Sean, and their first son to be closer to family. A shared desire for older homes, with Sean having grown up in a century-old farmhouse, was a key factor in their property search. The couple's non-negotiable requirement was to purchase an old house, though they did not anticipate acquiring a structure as unique as a former schoolhouse. In August 2021, while still residing in New York, Grissom and her husband purchased the historic building for $175,000. They relocated to Franklin two years later and stayed with relatives while the renovation was underway, finally moving into their transformed home in 2024. The schoolhouse, built in 1914, was originally named Union Joint and served to educate children from the peripheries of two separate school districts. Prior to Grissom's purchase, the building had remained off the market since the 1950s. The expansive 9,000-square-foot structure is situated on three acres of land and ceased its operation as a school in 1934. Grissom has documented the extensive process, highlighting both the rewarding aspects and the significant challenges encountered during the multi-year renovation. Her future plans for the historic property include further development and enhancements to fully realize her vision for the mansion.
