Qatar's Former Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Dies

Former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, has died. He ruled the Gulf nation from 1995 until his abdication in favor of his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013. During his 18-year reign, Sheikh Hamad oversaw a period of rapid modernization and economic diversification for Qatar, transforming it from a small pearling and fishing economy into a global energy powerhouse.

Under his leadership, Qatar significantly increased its natural gas production, becoming one of the world's largest exporters.
