US Brands Navigate Divided Nation on 250th Anniversary

U.S. brands and nonprofits are attempting to galvanize Americans with nationwide community-service drives and patriotic brand launches for the United States' 250th birthday. Major companies like Walmart and Coca-Cola are sponsoring tributes and releasing limited-edition merchandise. However, these unifying ambitions are encountering a mixed reception due to a prevailing uneasy national mood. A survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates a decline in patriotic sentiment, with fewer Americans viewing their country as exceptional compared to a decade ago. Views on national symbols, such as the American flag, are also divided along political, age, and racial lines.

The semiquincentennial celebrations are further complicated by rival events organized by two different commissions. In late 2023, President Donald Trump established Freedom 250, a nonprofit led by his allies, to offer alternative programming to America250, the official nonpartisan group chartered by Congress in 2016. Trump stated at the Freedom 250's Great American State Fair kickoff rally on June 24 that "The American dream is alive again," contrasting with what he described as "incompetence" in the previous four years. The event reportedly lost nearly all scheduled musical performers due to concerns about its political charge.

In contrast, America250's initiative, America Gives, focuses on strengthening volunteerism by encouraging participation with nonprofit partners and tracking service hours online. Merle Heatwole, National Commander of Salvation Army USA, noted that some potential participants have perceived political agendas in this nonpartisan program, despite it being co-sponsored by his Christian aid nonprofit. Nevertheless, he reported that thousands have engaged with the initiative, highlighting a continued desire for local impact and engagement despite broader national divisions.
