Thailand Eases Travel Rules to Attract Chinese Tourists

Thailand is actively working to revive its crucial Chinese tourism sector by easing entry requirements and enhancing connectivity. The Thai government announced on March 12, 2024, that it would permanently waive visa fees for Chinese tourists, a move intended to make travel more accessible and appealing. This policy shift aims to counter a significant drop in Chinese arrivals, which have not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels, impacting Thailand's tourism-dependent economy.

Beyond visa incentives, Thailand is focusing on increasing direct flight capacity from various Chinese cities. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is collaborating with airlines to add more routes and frequencies, targeting not only major hubs but also secondary cities within China. This strategy is designed to capture a broader segment of the Chinese travel market and encourage repeat visits by making travel more convenient. The government's goal is to restore Chinese tourist numbers to at least 80% of their 2019 peak by the end of 2024.
