SpaceX Builds Texas Pipeline to Fuel Starship Launches

SpaceX is commencing construction of an eight-mile natural gas pipeline to its Starbase complex in Texas next month. This pipeline, dubbed Starpipe, will transport natural gas to be processed into liquid methane, the primary fuel for its Starship spacecraft. The initiative aims to accelerate SpaceX's launch schedule, with a goal of up to 25 launches per year, potentially exceeding that number. Currently, fuel transportation to Starbase is time-consuming and costly.

The new pipeline is expected to reduce long-term expenses and increase launch frequency. SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell indicated to CNBC that the company is also exploring the possibility of drilling its own natural gas in the future to further decrease costs. The groundwork for this fuel supply system began in August when SpaceX filed engineering plans with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a liquefaction facility at Starbase. Over the past three years, SpaceX has secured more than 100 oil and gas leases in Texas.

Starpipe will reportedly originate from an 83-acre site at the Port of Brownsville, which SpaceX plans to lease from the city for 50 years. While the pipeline offers significant fiscal advantages for SpaceX's operations, some local residents have expressed concerns regarding potential environmental impacts on the sensitive wetland habitats near Starbase. This is not the first time the company has faced environmental scrutiny, following the 2023 mid-air explosion of a Starship Super Heavy launch that scattered debris.
