How puppets are helping women and children in Gaza cope with trauma
A puppet show initiative in Gaza is employing storytelling and creative workshops to assist women and children in processing trauma. The project, which began in early 2024, aims to provide a safe space for expression and healing amidst ongoing conflict. Participants engage in creating their own puppet characters and narratives, allowing them to externalize difficult experiences and emotions. The workshops are facilitated by local artists and psychologists trained in trauma-informed care. Initial feedback from participants indicates a reduction in anxiety and an improved sense of agency. The program has reached over 150 individuals, with plans to expand its reach to additional communities within Gaza by the end of 2024. The use of puppetry is a recognized therapeutic tool for children, enabling them to communicate complex feelings indirectly. The project is supported by a grant from the International Relief Fund, totaling $50,000 for its first year of operation.
