How One College Addresses Food Insecurity Through Urban Agriculture

The University of Dayton's Flyer Farm converted six former tennis courts into an urban agricultural space on June 23, 2026, addressing food insecurity and offering practical educational experiences for students. This initiative has resulted in the donation of thousands of pounds of fresh produce annually to local communities. The farm operates as a living laboratory, integrating agricultural practices with academic coursework and providing students with direct involvement in food production. Students gain valuable skills in urban farming techniques, sustainable agriculture, and community engagement through their participation in the Flyer Farm project. The program aims to foster a deeper understanding of food systems and contribute to local food security efforts while enhancing the educational journey of University of Dayton students.
