Latvia's President Warns of Escalating Russian Risk-Taking Against NATO's Collective Defense

Latvia's President Edgars Rinkēvičs has issued a significant warning, suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin's "appetite for risk is increasing." Rinkēvičs articulated these concerns in an interview, indicating a perceived shift in Russian strategic calculus that could lead to more assertive actions and provocations aimed at testing the boundaries of NATO's collective defense mechanisms, particularly along the alliance's eastern flank. These remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, exacerbated by Russia's ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. This conflict has profoundly reshaped the security landscape in Europe, especially for Baltic states like Latvia, which share borders with Russia and its ally Belarus.
