Ralph Lauren Partners With Gee's Bend Quilters

Ralph Lauren has launched its fifth Artist in Residence Program collection, this time in collaboration with the Gee's Bend quilting community of rural Alabama. This partnership showcases the distinctive abstract artistry of Gee's Bend quilters, transforming scraps of fabric into intricate geometric patterns that have historically served as both functional blankets and expressions of beauty amidst hardship. The collection features limited-edition products, including quilts, pillows, a jacket, and a tote bag, designed by renowned Gee's Bend artisans Claudia Pettway Charley and Loretta Pettway Bennett. These pieces highlight traditional Gee's Bend patterns, aiming to broaden the perception of American art and design through an equitable collaboration rather than mere aesthetic inspiration.

The Gee's Bend community, located in a curve of the Alabama River, has a profound history rooted in its origins as a former cotton plantation where residents trace their lineage to enslaved ancestors. For centuries, the women of Gee's Bend have practiced quilting as a means of survival and artistic expression, utilizing salvaged materials like worn denim, faded rags, and old feed sacks to create warm blankets during harsh winters. This tradition, passed down through generations, represents a powerful narrative of resilience, with artisans like Claudia Pettway Charley emphasizing how the quilters transformed struggle and sorrow into something beautiful. The movement to preserve this craft is active among fourth- and fifth-generation Gee's Bend quilters.

Loretta Pettway Bennett, another featured artisan, describes quilt-making as an integral part of everyday life in Gee's Bend. She recalls observing her mother and aunts engaged in the craft while socializing, underscoring the communal aspect of this tradition. As Bennett honed her skills, she developed a unique style that reflects the heritage of Gee's Bend. The community itself, officially known as Boykin, remains a close-knit enclave with approximately 200 to 300 residents who share a common history and deep connections.
