Gorillaz Exhibition 'House of Kong' Opens in NYC

The virtual band Gorillaz, co-created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, has launched an immersive exhibition titled 'House of Kong' in New York City. This exhibition, which opened in Brooklyn's Agger Fish Building, commemorates 25 years of the band's existence and its extensive cultural impact. 'House of Kong' offers visitors a journey through the history of Gorillaz, exploring the artwork, music, artifacts, and mythology that underpin the virtual members: bassist Murdoc Niccals, singer 2D, drummer Russel Hobbs, and guitarist Noodle. The exhibition is designed to immerse attendees in the world of Gorillaz, set within a representation of Kong Studios, the band's fictional headquarters. The experience lasts approximately one hour and delves into the deep lore that has been developed over the band's tenure, hinting at playful narratives such as 2D's potential involvement in the disappearance of Lucian Freud's Francis Bacon painting in 1988. This exhibition marks the first time Gorillaz's complete visual legacy has been honored with a dedicated in-person event. It features extensive galleries showcasing early conceptual art, discarded character designs, and previously unreleased video content accumulated over the years. The exhibition is positioned not merely as a retrospective but as an exploration of the band's continuous creative evolution and appetite for invention. Gorillaz, established in the 1990s by Albarn, the frontman of the band Blur, and Hewlett, the illustrator known for 'Tank Girl,' was conceived as a response to the perceived celebrity artifice of the era. The duo aimed to create a hybrid art and music project that the industry had not yet seen. Over its 25-year history, Gorillaz has achieved significant commercial and critical success, including numerous chart-topping songs, hundreds of live performances, multiple awards, and a Guinness World Record. Beyond its musical achievements and genre-bending collaborations, Gorillaz has also significantly influenced a new generation of animators and artists, inspiring a 'punkish rush' and a sustained drive for innovation. The 'House of Kong' exhibition culminates with a Gorillaz performance at Madison Square Garden on September 29. The exhibition is scheduled for a month-long run in New York City.
