Homeowners Can’t Find Contractors or Electricians. The AI Boom Is To Blame.

The burgeoning artificial intelligence industry is exacerbating a shortage of skilled tradespeople, particularly electricians and HVAC technicians, impacting the residential construction sector. Large AI data center projects, such as the 4 million-square-foot Stargate facility in Abilene, Texas, backed by OpenAI and Oracle, are drawing these essential workers away from home building and repair. According to The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, electrical subcontractors can account for 45% to 70% of a data center's construction budget, enabling these projects to offer significantly higher wages. This labor drain is causing project delays and increased costs for homeowners and residential builders. Gene Lantrip, an Abilene homebuilder, notes that while the influx of temporary workers creates demand for new housing, his subcontractors have lost numerous employees to data center construction, leading to longer build times for houses and repairs. Abilene is experiencing increased demand due to regional economic expansion, with local leaders actively working to expand housing options for the estimated 14,000 temporary workers and their families. Lantrip's company, which typically builds 60 to 70 houses annually, has 86 houses under construction this year, indicating a surge in new home building driven by this temporary worker population.
