Heritage Ranch in Texas Sells for $46M After 60 Years in Same Family

The Y Bar O Ranch, a 29,071-acre legacy property in far West Texas, sold in April for $46 million after being in the same family for 60 years. The "turnkey legacy ranch" was acquired by a local landowner within a month of its public listing, according to listing broker Chad Duggar of Hall and Hall. The sellers were the descendants of the original owners, William Blake "Dub" Yarborough and his wife, Kay, with the land having been passed down through the family since Blake's death in 2006.
Duggar noted that the ranch generated significant interest even before it was officially publicized, with a contract secured within 30 days of showings. This rapid sale is attributed to the ranch's meticulous maintenance over the decades and its rarity in the market. Properties of such quality and size are infrequent, and when priced appropriately, they attract substantial demand in the region. The Y Bar O Ranch is situated in the Big Bend region of Texas and boasts a well-established calf-and-cow operation, fully updated infrastructure, and a comprehensive set of facilities.
Beyond its agricultural capabilities, the Y Bar O Ranch includes a four-bedroom stucco home, a manager's residence, a bunkhouse, an office, workshops, barns, a roping arena, ten sets of livestock pens, and twenty-one pastures. A secondary camp serves the southern portion of the property. Water resources are described as abundant, with 28 wells, an extensive network of water storage, pipelines, and drinking troughs, supplemented by springs and seasonal creeks. The landscape offers panoramic 360-degree views of prominent mountains, including Elephant Mountain, Cathedral Mountain, Mount Ord, Cienega Mountain, and Santiago Peak. The diverse topography supports a variety of native plant life, such as grasses, oak, cottonwoods, juniper, mesquite, yucca, and other forbs, making it ideal for grazing. The property's reputation for quality, diverse topography, excellent water features, and abundant wildlife contributed to its high market value and swift sale.
