Bentley Unveils Torcal, Its First All-Electric Vehicle

Bentley officially unveiled the Torcal, its first all-electric vehicle, on an occasion that included media flights to Monterey, California, and opportunities to experience pre-production models. Named after a Spanish rock formation, the Torcal represents a significant shift for the luxury automaker, moving away from its traditional internal combustion engines towards a fully electric future. The production version of the Torcal presents a more blocky and less bulbous design than the camouflaged pre-production vehicle previously shown, and it incorporates design elements inspired by the EXP 15 concept, particularly at the rear. While the Torcal's exact pricing has not yet been disclosed, it is expected to be positioned below the Bentley Bentayga SUV in the company's lineup, or at least below the plug-in hybrid version of the Bentayga. The underlying technology for the Torcal is shared with Porsche, as both brands are part of the larger Volkswagen Group. This shared platform allows for the integration of advanced electric powertrains. The standard Torcal model is equipped with a dual-motor setup that delivers a peak output of 810 horsepower (604 kW) and 880 lb-ft (1,194 Nm) of torque. This configuration enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds. The more performance-oriented Torcal S variant boasts even higher specifications, offering a maximum output of 875 horsepower (653 kW) and 995 lb-ft (1,350 Nm) of torque. This enhanced power allows the Torcal S to achieve 60 mph from a standstill in a rapid 2.8 seconds, and 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. The top speed for the Torcal S is rated at 162 mph (260 km/h), an increase from the standard model's 155 mph (250 km/h). These performance figures position the Torcal as a potent contender in the luxury electric vehicle market, aiming to blend Bentley's signature luxury and performance with sustainable electric propulsion. The development and release of the Torcal signify Bentley's commitment to electrification, aligning with broader industry trends and regulatory pressures towards zero-emission vehicles.
