WhatsApp Opens Username Reservations Before Feature Launch

Meta Platforms announced on Monday that reservations are now open for WhatsApp usernames, a significant new feature set to roll out later this year. This marks the first major change to WhatsApp's connection system in its 17-year history, moving away from mandatory phone number sharing for communication. Previously, users needed another person's registered phone number to initiate contact on the platform. Phone numbers, being sensitive personal identifiers used for various purposes including two-factor authentication and location inference, were thus implicitly shared whenever a WhatsApp conversation began.

The introduction of usernames aims to enhance user privacy by allowing individuals and businesses to connect without disclosing their phone numbers. Users will be able to share their unique WhatsApp username instead, providing a layer of protection for their personal contact information. This new system is designed to maintain the ease of communication that WhatsApp is known for, while giving users more control over their privacy.

While reservations are open, the username feature itself is not yet active. WhatsApp has opened the reservation window to allow users to secure their preferred usernames before they become available for use. Once a username is reserved, it cannot be claimed by anyone else. Users will be able to begin sending and receiving messages using their chosen usernames once the feature officially goes live later this year. Meta, which also operates Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, is implementing this change to modernize the messaging experience and address privacy concerns.
