God of War TV Series Recasts Kratos After Actor Injury

Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television announced this week they will recast the role of Kratos in their live-action God of War television series due to a severe bicep tear sustained by lead actor Ryan Hurst during a stunt. The injury requires Hurst to undergo surgery and a recovery period of four to six months, making it impossible for him to continue in the demanding role. This setback necessitates a costly and rare mid-production recasting, forcing the studios to discard four fully completed episodes filmed in Vancouver.

Hurst had undergone a significant physical transformation for the part, gaining 40 pounds of muscle to embody the iconic Spartan warrior. His connection to the franchise also extends to voicing Thor in the video game "God of War Ragnarök." The decision to recast and reshoot was made to maintain the production's momentum, which was planned for a two-season back-to-back filming schedule. Showrunner Ronald D. Moore is overseeing the project's transition.

The series adapts the 2018 Norse-themed reboot of the gaming franchise, following Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey through mythic realms. The confirmed supporting cast includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Production is currently paused as the studios secure a replacement for the lead role. The studios aim to resume filming in mid-October.
