GM Is Making EV Charging A Lot Simpler With Energy Pass, NACS On All 2027 Models
General Motors (GM) announced on March 14, 2024, that it will adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for all its new electric vehicles (EVs) starting in 2027. This move will provide GM's EV customers with access to Tesla's Supercharger network, which comprises over 12,000 charging stations across North America. In addition to the NACS adoption, GM is launching a new app called Energy Pass, designed to consolidate access to major charging networks in the U.S. into a single interface. The Energy Pass app will also support Plug & Charge technology, allowing vehicles to automatically authenticate and initiate charging sessions without requiring a separate app or card. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the complexity and friction associated with EV charging for GM owners, addressing a key concern for potential EV buyers. The company stated that this integration is part of a broader strategy to enhance the EV ownership experience and accelerate the transition to electric mobility. GM anticipates that the NACS port will be integrated into its EVs beginning in 2025, with the full transition to NACS connectors across its lineup occurring by the 2027 model year.
