GM Recalls 15,000 Cadillac EVs Over Seat Defect

General Motors initiated a recall for approximately 15,000 Cadillac Lyriq electric SUVs this week, halting shipments of the luxury electric vehicle. The recall addresses a defect in the third-row seat mechanism, which could potentially trap occupants. This issue is reportedly similar to a problem previously identified in Hyundai Palisade vehicles.

The affected vehicles are the 2024 and 2025 model years of the Cadillac Lyriq. According to a defect information report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the third-row seat recliner mechanism may not have been properly welded. This could lead to the seatback not being adequately secured, increasing the risk of injury to occupants in the event of a crash.

GM has not yet received any reports of injuries related to this specific defect in the Lyriq. However, the company is proactively addressing the issue to ensure passenger safety. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by GM, and dealers will be instructed to inspect the third-row seats and repair or replace the recliner mechanism as necessary. The company expects the repair to take approximately 2 hours to complete.

This recall impacts a significant portion of Cadillac's electric SUV production. The Cadillac Lyriq is a key model in GM's broader strategy to transition towards an all-electric future. The company aims to have a fully electric lineup by 2035. The recall is expected to cause minor delays in deliveries for the affected models as the company works through the necessary repairs.
