GM becomes first automaker to partner with Redwood across full battery lifecycle
General Motors announced an expanded partnership with Redwood Materials on October 26, 2023, to encompass the full battery lifecycle, marking the first time an automaker has engaged Redwood Materials across manufacturing scrap recovery, end-of-life recycling, and second-life energy storage. This collaboration includes the deployment of a 1.5 MW / 7.2 MWh energy storage system at a GM manufacturing plant in Michigan, constructed from approximately 100 repurposed GM battery packs. Redwood Materials projects that this system will generate over $3 million in electricity cost savings for the plant throughout its operational lifespan. The expanded agreement signifies a comprehensive approach to battery management, integrating sustainable practices from production to reuse.
