Medicare Offers $50/Month GLP-1 Weight Loss Drug Trial

Starting Wednesday, certain Medicare and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries can access brand-name GLP-1 weight loss drugs for $50 per month through a new trial program called Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. This temporary initiative, running until the end of 2027, marks the first time many older adults can have GLP-1s covered by insurance specifically for weight loss purposes. However, eligibility is contingent on meeting specific weight and health requirements, and individuals already receiving GLP-1 coverage for conditions like diabetes or sleep apnea will not qualify for this program.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), stated that the program aims to gather data that could inform future long-term coverage decisions while providing immediate financial relief to older Americans. He emphasized that the high cost of these medications has been a significant barrier to access, a problem he hopes this trial will begin to address. The program's success in collecting data on beneficiary uptake is a key objective for the agency.

Eligibility for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program is determined by body mass index (BMI) and other health conditions. While at least 10 million of the over 70 million Medicare enrollees are considered overweight or obese, a smaller subset will be eligible for this specific trial. To qualify, beneficiaries must have Medicare drug coverage and a BMI of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher combined with a pre-existing health condition such as a history of heart attack, stroke, or prediabetes. The CMS website provides a comprehensive list of qualifying health conditions. BMI measurements are assessed at the commencement of GLP-1 therapy.
