David Oyelowo, Viola Prettejohn Star in Dragon Tattoo Series

Sky's television adaptation of Stieg Larsson's acclaimed Millennium book series, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," has officially cast its lead actors. David Oyelowo, known for his roles in "Silo" and "Selma," will portray the disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist. Viola Prettejohn, who has appeared in "The Crown" and "The Testament of Ann Lee," is set to embody the iconic hacker Lisbeth Salander. This new series marks a significant reimagining of the popular novels that have previously been adapted into successful film franchises.

The Millennium series, first introduced with the novel "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" in 2005, follows the investigations of Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander. Blomkvist is a freelance investigative journalist who often finds himself entangled in complex and dangerous cases. Salander is a brilliant but deeply troubled computer hacker with a photographic memory and a fierce independent streak. Their unlikely partnership forms the core of the narrative as they uncover dark secrets and conspiracies.

This television adaptation by Sky aims to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved characters and their compelling stories. The original novels by Stieg Larsson achieved massive international success, selling over 100 million copies worldwide and being translated into more than 50 languages. The first novel was published posthumously in 2005, followed by "The Girl Who Played with Fire" in 2006 and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest" in 2007. Larsson tragically died before the publication of the first book, leaving behind an unfinished manuscript that was later completed by another author.

The previous film adaptations include the 2009 Swedish version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," starring Noomi Rapace as Salander and Michael Nyqvist as Blomkvist, which garnered critical acclaim and international attention. This was followed by a 2011 American adaptation, also titled "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," directed by David Fincher, with Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist. Both film series explored the intricate plots and dark themes present in Larsson's novels, including corporate corruption, family secrets, and violence against women. The casting of Oyelowo and Prettejohn signals a new chapter for the franchise on the small screen, with expectations high for their interpretation of these complex characters.
