Europe Heatwave Pushes East, Germany Faces Over 40C

Germany is preparing for extreme heat, with temperatures forecast to climb well over 40 degrees Celsius as a significant European heatwave continues its eastward progression. This intense weather system has already impacted several Western European nations, bringing conditions significantly above seasonal averages.

Analysis conducted by the World Weather Attribution group revealed that the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain experienced temperatures ranging from 5C to 12C higher than their typical seasonal norms. This research further indicated that heat records were either broken or were projected to be broken in 45% of the 854 European cities that were studied. The scientists utilized the wet bulb globe temperature metric, which accounts for air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation, to assess the real-world heat stress individuals might face outdoors.

The findings from World Weather Attribution underscore a concerning trend, suggesting a rapid exacerbation of European heatwaves over the past few decades, which they attribute to fossil fuel emissions. The study examined the impact of these emissions on temperature increases, providing a scientific link between human activity and the severity of the current heat event. The group's methodology aims to quantify the influence of climate change on extreme weather phenomena, offering concrete data on the human contribution to rising global temperatures and their consequences.
