German Prosecutors Charge Ukrainian Over Nord Stream Sabotage

German federal prosecutors announced on August 14, 2024, that they have charged a Ukrainian national in connection with the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. The suspect is alleged to have led a small, five-person team that carried out the operation in September 2022. Prosecutors identified a yacht, the 'Andromeda,' as the vessel used by the team to plant explosives on the subsea pipelines. The indictment states that the suspect, identified only as 'Serhiy K.', is accused of "bombing" and "destruction of property" in relation to the incident.

According to the indictment, Serhiy K. allegedly procured the explosives and organized the logistics for the mission. The 'Andromeda' yacht, which was chartered from a Polish company allegedly owned by Ukrainian nationals, is central to the prosecution's case. Investigators believe the team used the yacht to travel from the German coast to the pipeline locations in the Baltic Sea. The prosecution asserts that the suspect acted on behalf of a Ukrainian intelligence service, though the specific entity has not been named.

The sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which connect Russia to Germany, caused significant environmental damage and disrupted energy supplies. The incident occurred during a period of heightened geopolitical tension following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. German authorities have been investigating the incident for nearly two years, with this indictment marking a significant step in their efforts to identify those responsible.

While the investigation continues, the focus remains on the alleged involvement of Ukrainian actors. The German Federal Public Prosecutor General's Office has not yet provided further details on the evidence supporting the charges against Serhiy K. The case highlights the complex international dimension of the investigation and the challenges in attributing responsibility for such acts of sabotage.
