George Soros Out-Gives Giving Pledge Signatories

George Soros, the 95-year-old investor and founder of Soros Fund Management and the Open Society Foundations, has committed more than $32 billion to philanthropy since 1984, without signing the Giving Pledge. This commitment represents 76% of his net worth, a figure that surpasses the percentage of wealth given away by many billionaires who have signed the pledge. Forbes reported that Soros's philanthropic contributions exceed those of Warren Buffett in terms of percentage of net worth, although Buffett has donated a higher dollar amount, exceeding $60 billion.

Melinda French Gates, a co-founder of the Giving Pledge, expressed criticism in a December 2025 interview with Wired, questioning whether signatories have "given enough." The Giving Pledge, established with a promise from over 250 wealthy individuals to dedicate a majority of their wealth to philanthropy, has faced scrutiny for a lack of follow-through.

A July 2025 report by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) highlighted the unfulfilled nature of the pledge, noting that only one living couple among the original 57 signatories, John and Laura Arnold, had given away half of their wealth. The IPS report characterized the pledge as "unfulfilled, unfulfillable, and not our ticket to a fairer, better future."

The IPS report also pointed to a mathematical challenge: since signing the pledge, the 32 original U.S. pledgers who remain billionaires have seen their wealth grow by approximately 283%. This growth rate outpaces their philanthropic disbursements, illustrating a paradox where wealth continues to accumulate even as significant amounts are donated, as seen with MacKenzie Scott, who has given away $26 billion but continues to see her net worth increase.
