Gen Z is turning Instagram into the new LinkedIn

Gen Z professionals are increasingly turning to Instagram and YouTube for career advice and networking, bypassing LinkedIn. A survey by résumé builder Zety revealed that 80% of Gen Z workers cited YouTube as a top platform for career advice, followed by Instagram at 73%. In contrast, only 26% of the 919 Gen Z respondents surveyed considered LinkedIn their primary source for career guidance. Instagram is also emerging as a significant platform for professional networking, with 74% of Gen Z users leveraging it for this purpose, and 69% reporting success in securing jobs or internships through the platform. This shift suggests that Instagram is evolving beyond its original purpose of photo sharing to encompass roles traditionally filled by LinkedIn, such as recruitment, career coaching, networking, and employer branding. Employers seeking to attract Gen Z talent may need to adopt strategies that align with social media creator skills, emphasizing transparent demonstrations of company culture. Career coach Jasmine Escalera, who contributed to the Zety report, noted that Gen Z's approach to work and career development is influenced by their upbringing on social media platforms like Instagram, where they naturally seek information and definitions related to their professional lives. This contrasts with the millennial generation's emphasis on performative professionalism often seen on LinkedIn. Younger workers are also using social media to research potential employers, seeking to rebalance the traditional hiring process.
