Gage Roads Brews Beer-Filled Surfboard With Jack Robinson

Gage Roads Brew Co., a Western Australian brewery, has developed what it claims is the world's first surfboard capable of holding and dispensing beer. The project, which began as a long-running joke among surfers about board measurements, involved legendary surfboard shaper Chris Garrett of Phantom Surfboards and was tested by Olympic surfing medalist and part-owner of Gage Roads, Jack Robinson. The custom surfboard is designed to carry ten litres of Gage Roads' Single Fin Summer Ale while remaining surfable. The creation of the beer-holding surfboard presented significant engineering challenges, particularly in ensuring the beer remained pourable and drinkable while maintaining the board's surfing capabilities. A key element of the design is a food-safe chamber integrated into the board's core, specifically sealed to preserve the beer's freshness. Chris Garrett shaped this chamber in a style reminiscent of the Greenough Spoon, an experimental surfboard design from the 1960s, thereby connecting contemporary innovation with surf history. The surfboard features a removable tap for pouring the beer and a separate valve that allows the chamber to be pressurized, enabling the beer to flow. Jack Robinson, an athlete accustomed to high-performance equipment, found the project a refreshing departure from competitive surfing. He described the experience as "sick," noting the contrast between his usual focus on performance and this endeavor, which was purely about having fun and testing the functionality of the "crazy thing." Robinson acknowledged that the ten litres of beer made paddling more challenging due to the shifting weight, but he was surprised by how well the board performed once he was on his feet, stating it "went way better than I thought." The board's design aimed to balance the novelty of a beer-dispensing surfboard with the practicalities of wave riding, a feat that required overcoming hurdles related to sealing and pressurization, which reportedly led to "a few explosions along the way" during development. The project highlights a unique intersection of craft brewing, surfboard shaping, and extreme sports, demonstrating a commitment by Gage Roads to innovative marketing stunts that engage with the surfing community.
