FunnyPlaying FPGB Mini Plays Game Boy Cartridges

FunnyPlaying has introduced the FPGB Mini, an ultra-compact handheld console designed to play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges without the need for adapters. This new device is notably small, measuring just slightly wider than a standard Game Boy cartridge, with dimensions of 113mm x 64mm x 22mm and a weight of approximately 135g. A dedicated carrying case is included to enhance its portability. The FPGB Mini's cartridge support is exclusively for Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles, excluding later generations like the Game Boy Advance. The console distinguishes itself by employing Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology instead of traditional software emulation. This approach uses an FPGA chip to directly replicate the behavior of the original console's circuitry, ensuring a 1:1 recreation of the vintage hardware's quirks, color palettes, and timing. Visually, the FPGB Mini combines retro design with modern enhancements. It features a 2.98-inch IPS display with a resolution of 800 by 720 pixels. This specific resolution is chosen to scale the original Game Boy display by precisely five times. The screen supports 16.7 million colors and utilizes an RGB565 pipeline. Dedicated processing ensures that Game Boy Color titles maintain their intended color saturation, aiming to reproduce the vibrant visuals envisioned by developers decades ago. The console's front layout includes a four-way directional pad on the left, standard A and B buttons on the right, and Start and Select buttons positioned at the bottom. Beyond its core gaming capabilities, the FPGB Mini supports physical link cable connections, allowing for multiplayer experiences with original Game Boy Link Cables. It also incorporates a built-in real-time clock, a feature that enhances the experience for games that utilize time-based events.
