Frontier Airlines Adds 4 Routes, Fills Spirit's Void

Frontier Airlines announced on Tuesday the addition of four new routes, strategically filling service gaps left by the recent collapse of Spirit Airlines. These new flights target key markets where Spirit previously held a significant presence, including South Florida, Orlando, the Caribbean, and Detroit. This expansion aims to capture market share and cater to demand in these regions.

The expansion includes new service from Frontier's home base at Denver International Airport (DEN) to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), scheduled to begin on November 20 with daily flights. Additionally, Frontier will introduce a route from Detroit Wayne County Metropolitan Airport (DTW) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), also commencing November 20 with daily service. This move is particularly significant in Detroit, where Spirit was a major competitor to Delta Air Lines.

Further bolstering its network, Frontier will launch a daily route from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) in Puerto Rico starting December 17. Another new route will connect Kansas City International Airport (MCI) to Orlando International Airport (MCO), operating four times per week from November 20. Notably, Frontier had previously operated the DEN-FLL route in 2020 and the MCI-MCO route as recently as 2022, indicating a re-establishment of previously successful services.

This expansion by Frontier Airlines underscores a competitive response to the void left by Spirit Airlines' operational challenges. By reintroducing routes and targeting markets with demonstrated demand, Frontier seeks to solidify its position as a leading low-cost carrier and capitalize on the shifting landscape of the airline industry.
