Framework Downgrades Laptop 13 Pro Orders Due to RAM Cost Spike

Framework announced this week that it is downgrading some preorders for its Laptop 13 Pro and Mainboard products. This decision stems from a substantial and unexpected increase in the cost of LPCAMM2 RAM modules. The company stated that the price spike has made it unfeasible to fulfill certain configurations at the originally quoted prices.

Specifically, Framework is reducing some 64GB configurations of the Laptop 13 Pro to 32GB. Additionally, certain DIY Edition and Mainboard orders that were planned with 32GB of RAM will now be downgraded to 16GB. The company is in the process of notifying affected customers about these changes and offering them options. These options are expected to include accepting the downgraded configuration, potentially with a price adjustment, or canceling their order.

The LPCAMM2 is a newer type of memory module designed for enhanced performance and power efficiency in laptops. However, its adoption has been slower than anticipated, leading to limited supply and increased manufacturing costs. This has directly impacted Framework's ability to secure the necessary RAM at a price point that allows for their standard margin and customer pricing. The company has not yet provided a timeline for when it might be able to offer the higher RAM configurations again.
