Zillow Job Discrimination Lawsuit Nears Settlement

Former Zillow employee Samuel James Herrera has informed a Denver-based U.S. District Court that he and his former employer are progressing toward a settlement in his job discrimination lawsuit. Herrera, who identifies as a "day-one Zillow employee," notified Judge Regina Rodriguez on Wednesday that the parties are actively working on a settlement agreement that aims to resolve all claims in the case. The specific terms of this settlement are still being finalized, according to the notice of settlement filed with the court. Such filings typically indicate that either all or a portion of the plaintiff's claims have been resolved.

Herrera's original complaint, filed in September, alleged wrongful termination by Zillow in February 2024. He detailed a career at Zillow that began in 2010, during which he received seven promotions, culminating in the role of general manager of rentals for the Eastern region in 2022. Herrera asserted that his "stellar performance" continued in this role, where he consistently surpassed sales targets. Despite his achievements, he claimed he was overlooked for further advancements and subjected to different standards compared to his white colleagues. Herrera further alleged that Zillow terminated his employment after he raised concerns about discrimination.

At the time the lawsuit was initially filed, Zillow issued a statement to HousingWire asserting that the claims were "inconsistent with Zillow's culture and values" and deemed them "without merit." The company emphasized its commitment to fostering an environment of dignity and respect. Zillow also clarified that while founded in 2004, Herrera joined the company in 2010, making him a long-tenured employee but not a "day-one" employee as he had claimed. Zillow did not immediately respond to further requests for comment.
